BREEDER OF THE YEAR

Beginning in 2008, the members of the OVBTC nominated and voted for a "Breeder of the Year".  The honoree was then asked to judge Sweepstakes for the Run for the Roses Specialty at the Louisville, KY, shows the following year.  2011 was the last year for this award.

Carole Corbin

Carole Corbin:  When I think back to the beginning of my Tervuren adventure it hardly seems possible that 20 years after we picked up our first Tervuren puppy in 1991, Belgians would emerge into a passion and lead to my becoming:
  • ABTC member since 1992
  • UBSDA member since 1995
  • Pocono Mountain KC member since 2001
  • CFCBB Member since 1996
  • A breeder of 12 litters:  9 under the Chimeric affix beginning in 1998; 3 co-breedings, the first in 1996
  • UKC Senior Belgian Conformation Judge
  • AKC BBE Medallion holder - 10+ AKC bred-by-exhibitor Champions
  • AKC Breeder of Merit  - application filed
  • AKC Conformation Judge - working towards

Along the way there were multiple trips here & overseas to meet fellow Tervuren breeders & attend numerous Belgian breed specialty shows as both an exhibitor & spectator.

Dogs bred by or co-bred by Chimeric have achieved:
  • AKC and UKC breed Championships
  • 2x BOSS ABTC National
  • Best In Specialty Show
  • Best Puppy in Specialty shows
  • Best of Opposite Puppy in Specialty shows
  • Multiple AKC Group placements
  • HIT and RHIT and herding
  • 2 MACHS with a third well on his way

More than a few from our breeding have done well in agility, herding, tracking, obedience and rally.  I am thankful to their dedicated owners for wanting to do things with their dogs, and I’m proud to have bred their companions.

In breeding, I keep “first, do no harm” in mind as a touchstone for all of my litters.  Leave the breed (hopefully) in better shape than you found it. Being very health conscious, we currently test for: OFA hips, elbows, thyroid & cardiac, CERF.  We strongly encourage all of puppy people to also do health checks & offer incentives to achieve that goal.

The road has been long, some of it paved in cobblestones,  quicksand, glass, detour signs, dirt roads, lava, toll roads and some of it was oh so sweet and smooth.  Along the way I’ve met hundreds of Belgian fanciers worldwide and overall, it’s been a lovely ride and I’m looking forward to the next 20 years of road ahead.

Dermott Young

Dermott Young: I am truly excited and honored to be a part of the Ohio Valley Belgian Tervuren Club 2011 “Run for the Ribbons” Regional Specialty.

My life with dogs, more specifically Belgian Shepherds, began in the late 80's. Both of my dogs came from old lines locally bred. I showed these dogs in conformation, agility and obedience taking them all the way to utility. Although they were wonderful dogs, they lacked type and had serious health issues as a result I decided to do something for this beautiful breed.

My search took me to Belgium and thanks to Eric Desschans I was blessed with a great dog - his name was Perfect of the Two. Perfect was joined by Gabelle de la DoucePlaine, a beautiful female with gorgeous type and excellent character. From there the Klaar kennel name was selected, which means “Clear” or “Clean”. Gabelle produced a beautiful female, CH KlaarAltesse La Foi V Kouros - “Tessy”, she won the UKC Specialty and three ABTC Regional Specialties. I have shown my dogs in Holland and France, winning four s.r. titles at the French Specialty.I bred the first North American Tervuren to gain this title, s.r. BISS Can CHKlaar Perfect GrysGeest “ Ghost”, he was 6th Excellent at that show. At homeI have won the Canadian Specialty twice, multiple best Canadian bred titles, many wins at the ABTC Specialty and UKC Specialty Shows. I am the proud recipient of five ABTC BAR awards: Perfect gained all three BAR titles; Wanda her C-BAR and Twinny her P-BAR. My breeding's have produced OTCH and HITs in obedience; tracking and agility titles including MACHs;Breed Champions in UKC, CKC and AKC, BISS and BIS dogs. All the above and much more, were made possible by the marvelous Klaar people and their dogs.

Along the way I have made many great friends...the result of having these great dogs.

Before I even thought about breeding, one of my mentors summed up what was to become my philosophy as a breeder:  “You are responsible for the dogs you produce from the time the hit the ground until they are under it.”

This sense of responsibility has driven most, if not all of the choices I have made as I embarked on breeding my first litter.

The responsibility started even before any litter was even planned.  It started before I had my first Belgian.  One of the first responsibilities of a breeder is to educate themselves.  I attended my first National before I even had a Belgian, sitting ringside with long-time breeders and owners – discussing the merits of each dog and their pedigree.  Belgian overload for most novices, but as an information junkie, history fanatic and database geek, I was in heaven.  I spent the next 13 years educating myself before I even bred a litter.   This education took me to shows not only in the US, but in Europe.   I extensively research pedigrees, setting up my own database to track the information that I gathered.  I even studied French to better understand the issues of Le Belger Belge I collected.

The responsibility of breeding only the best manifested when I made decisions to breed or not breed.  When I made decisions on what dogs I wanted in my house.  I am limited in the numbers I can have due to location, but every dog that I have committed too, has lived their life as cherished companions in my house.  I made the painful decision not to breed my favorite bitch, my heart dog, a bitch with all her health clearances.  I declined inquiries to breed to my intact male, again with all his health clearances, but the inquiries came early, and I felt the responsible path was to wait until he was older.

A breeder is responsible for the future of the breed.  Health and temperament must be a priority.  A pretty dog that seizes is not an ideal companion.  A pretty dog with poor temperament is not fun.  And in our breed one of the biggest curses is epilepsy.  The only test we have is time.  Which is why I believe the only responsible thing for any breeder is to allow time.  I am not in a rush to breed any dog I have.  The dam of my first litter 5 ½ when whelped her first litter.  She had all her clearances, ALL of her littermates had their health clearances – she was a proven in the show ring (A National Specialty BOB and multiple Best in Show).  I also feel responsible to produce quality not quantity.  Her second litter was bred after her first litter was old enough for health clearances.  And with the assistance of wonderful puppy people, we were able to screen every puppy in her first litter – hips, eyes and elbows.

My responsibility extends well past the decision to breed - each litter receives maximum attention.  Socialization is extensive with a multitude of persons, places and things.  It continues with placing puppies in the best homes that will maximize their potential.  Extensive effort is made to match the right puppy to the right home.  And if the right home is not readily available, I make sure that any ‘leftovers’ continue to have the early socialization.  I am not in a rush to get puppies out the door – I prefer to wait for the right home.  And once they are placed, I am always available – we have connected as an extended family, an email group keeps us all in touch and up to date.  I am available 24x7 for all my puppy people.  I will take any dog back – full a full refund- no questions asked – and will and have driven across country to connect with my puppy people.

My next endeavor is www.belgianpuppy.com to encourage responsible breeding – A website that will allow responsible breeders to advertise upcoming litters for little or no cost.  I envision this being a web presence to counter the plethora of websites that allow advertisements regardless of the ethics of the breeder or lack of health clearances of the sire and dam.  A one stop place, where potential puppy homes can educate themselves about our breed and the merits of responsible breeders.  A place to find responsible breeders.
